Boost Sustainable Coffee Production in Laos

This coffee project will train poor farmers to increase their yields, produce higher quality coffee, and connect them with international markets, helping them lift their families out of poverty. By diversifying farming practices, families will also develop skills to plant and grow other crops and improve their overall nutrition.

Project Background

Ethnic communities in Dak Cheung suffer from crippling poverty. This includes poor health, low birthweight rates, high rates of child stunting and severe malnourishment. Families that reside in these ethnic communities remain poor as their household economy is largely based on subsistence farming. In most remote communities, cash crop production has only developed over the past five to ten years. 

Coffee is the single most important commodity globally with an estimated 25 million people worldwide growing coffee. A CARE assessment in the Dak Cheung region showed that on average 95% of households per village grow process and/or trade coffee. Additionally, two-thirds of surveyed villages identified coffee as their main source of income, demonstrating this is a key crop for these communities. 

Coffee harvesting has great and proven potential to generate wealth, provided the value chain reaches a certain development level. Despite the enormous potential for the Dak Cheung region, there are ongoing challenges for the industry.  Some of these challenges include poor coffee crop maintenance, low quality of produce, lack of links to formal markets; and limited access to finance for product development. Many families have recently moved to the region and are unfamiliar with farming techniques and practices suitable to their new land.

Project Objectives & Outcomes

The objectives of this project are:

  • Increasing the income of small-scale farmers
  • Linkage to supply chains for rural farmers
  • Inclusion of women farmers in decision making
  • Training farmer’s with better techniques
  • Improved family nutrition

The outcomes of achieving these objectives will be:

  • Coffee farmers have the knowledge and skills to improve coffee production and quality through strengthened technical training. 
  • Coffee producers are more deeply integrated and have a better understanding of the Arabica supply chain and how they can add value to their crops. 
  • Farmers benefit from increased income and profitability in the Arabica coffee supply chain.

What's Covered in Project Costs?

Your funding will support coffee farmers to gain technical training in order to improve their farming techniques and diversify their crops.

With their increased income and improved farming techniques, farmers can help lift themselves and their communities out of poverty.

Project Partners and Community Involvement

The Boosting Coffee Production project in Laos works in partnership with the private sector and local government.

Cooperation with partners including local government will be engaged in the project and have their skills and capacity developed through the project to ensure on going ownership of the project post-CARE. 

Part of a Larger Strategy

Achieving long-term sustainability is a key objective. The outcomes and supporting strategies of this project have a high likelihood of achieving long-term sustainability. They have been derived from experience on projects in Laos and other countries with similar challenges.
